How Nigeria's Delta state is pioneering efforts in climate change adaptation strategies

Victor Sorokwu in Business Day (Nigeria): The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Delta State Government have set a time line in July to sign a pact on measures aimed at combating the effect of climate change in the state. The understanding came as part of resolutions reached at a three-day technical session between the state government and the UNDP team which deliberated extensively on Territorial Approach on Climate Change (TACC) strategy for attaining the global end goal.

UNDP team leader from the Geneva headquarters, Christopher Nuttal was particularly delighted that Delta State Government was steps ahead of other governments in Africa in the crusade and measures on Climate Change. The UNDP team and state government made the collaboration on TACC strategy January this year at the post-Copenhagen meeting of governments from numerous countries across continents.

The TACC strategy identified a defined partnership structure, climate change scenario preparation, identification of mitigation and adaptation, access to priority climate financing needs, comprehensive low carbon programme and resilient roadmap preparation, as key strategies to mitigate its impact. The UNDP team hinted after the technical parley at Asaba that a consultant would come to the state in May to interact with stakeholders and look into documents prepared by the Delta State Government.

...The reality of the threat of climate change is perceived differently by different countries culminating in the international summit last December in Copenhagen, Denmark, where a massive audience of over 35,000 personalities worldover gathered to discuss the implications of climatic change. Building on the Copenhagen Summit, Uduaghan of Delta State, January this year, met with over 130 governors across the world and commenced a series of consultations with international development partners to find common grounds to foster green economy in their respective regions and territories....
